A local mom gives

The sound of a newborn baby caught our attention at The Register Citizen office on Water Street yesterday. Juggling an older child and all of the responsibilities of caring for a newborn, this local mom was there to drop off packages of diapers for the Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive. She doubled up on her own diaper shopping this week to help someone who can't afford this basic necessity.

Founder of The Diaper Bank to speak in Torrington

Joanne Goldblum, founder of The Diaper Bank, a New Haven-based organization that was the inspiration for the launch of the Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive, will speak at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Torrington today.
Goldblum is one of the most articulate and passionate voices out there on this issue, and provided valuable advice for us when we met more than two years ago to discuss a similar effort for Northwest Connecticut.
Check back here for a report on her speech.

3rd annual Diaper Drive kicks off today!

The 3rd annual Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive will take place from July 1 to 31 to help alleviate and raise awareness of the burden that the high cost of diapers has on struggling local families with young children.

A joint project of the United Way of Northwest Connecticut and The Register Citizen newspaper, the effort has provided more than 100,000 diapers over the past two years through local food banks, nonprofit daycare centers and homeless and domestic violence shelters.

The cost of diapers, which can be as high as $100 a month for an infant, is an expense that, combined with higher gas prices and other costs, forces low-income parents to choose among essentials such as proper nutrition for their children or themselves. Diapers are so expensive that some babies are left in a single soiled diaper all day as their parents try to stretch their budget.

And while food stamps, WIC and local food banks can help out with some food and formula, diapers are an “essential” not typically covered by such programs.

Like the newspaper’s and United Way’s joint sponsorship of the Warm the Children winter clothing program around the holidays each year, the Diaper Drive is structured so that 100 percent of every dollar donated will go directly toward purchasing diapers. Donations can be made to “Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive,” care of The United Way of Northwest Connecticut, P.O. Box 1001, Torrington, CT 06790-1001, or online at http://northwestunitedway.org.

The Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive accepts both cash donations – for purchase of diapers at bulk discount – as well as actual packages of diapers.

About the Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive

The Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive is a joint project of the United Way of Northwest Connecticut and The Register Citizen. Through their sponsorship of this effort, 100 percent of money donated to the Diaper Drive will go directly toward purchasing diapers for distribution by nonprofit organizations who work with children from low-income families in Northwest Connecticut. For more information, visit http://northwestconnecticutdiaperdrive.blogspot.com or contact Register Citizen Publisher Matt DeRienzo at 860-489-1877, mderienzo@registercitizen.com.

The need for Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive

· Infants need up to 12 diapers per day; toddlers about 8 diapers per day.

· An adequate supply of disposable diapers can cost more than $100 a month.

· In low-income households, babies often spend the entire day or longer in a single diaper, because the family cannot afford to buy an adequate supply of diapers.

· Inadequate diaper changing increases the risk of numerous health problems, including diaper rash, and may be linked to an increased rate of hepatitis.

· Low-income parents sometimes cannot take advantage of free or subsidizes child care if they cannot afford to leave a supply of disposable diapers at their child care center. An unfortunate consequence of an inadequate supply of diapers is work and school truancy among parents who have to stay home with their children because of it.

· A baby crying from being in a soiled diaper for a prolonged period of time may be at a greater risk of physical abuse by the caregiver, as recognized in studies of patterns of abuse among low-income families.

What You Can Do

· Donate whatever you can afford to the Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive fund. We will be buying diapers in bulk and at wholesale prices to stretch our dollars much further than it would cost a family to buy a single package of diapers at the store. A donation of only $15 will help us buy as many as 100 diapers.

· Organize a Diaper Drive through your service organization, church, youth group, school group or place of employment. Packages of diapers in all sorts of sizes are needed and welcome!

Frequently Asked Questions

· How can I qualify to receive diapers? Starting this fall, diapers will be distributed through some key local social service agencies and food banks in Torrington, Winsted and the Northwest Corner, including Catholic Charities, Family Strides, FISH, Friendly Hands Food Bank, Winsted Area Childcare, Brooker Memorial, Winsted Salvation Army, the Susan B. Anthony Project and Falls Village Day Care. In late summer/early fall, you can inquire at any of these agencies, and they will distribute diapers based on need and availability. Availability will be determined by the overall success of our campaign!

· Is my donation tax-deductible? Yes. The Northwest Connecticut Diaper Fund is a program of the United Way of Northwest Connecticut, a 501(c)3 organization.
